How the mind works. 

The naturally occurring state of hypnosis begins with the subconscious mind and everything it knows. The subconscious mind makes up 88% of the human mind, which means that subconscious behavior, which we are sometimes unaware of, dominates conscious decision making about our habits that we are trying to make. The subconscious mind is made up of the primitive Fight or Flight instinct, which is something we are born with as a source of protection. When danger presents itself we either fight the danger, or we run away from it. The subconscious also includes Known Associations, both positive and negative, which hypnotherapists refer to as Pleasure and Pain. 

The conscious mind makes up the other 12% of the human mind, and this is where we have Logic, Reasoning, Willpower, Decision making, and Decision making. 

The human mind also has, what is called, the critical mind. This develops in children from birth to the age of 8. The critical mind acts as a barrier between the subconscious mind conscious mind. This is an important part of the human mind, because it allows us to question things that could be potentially dangerous. Remember a time when you got a suspicious text message or email of someone asking for money that had to be given in the form of a gift card. Or a phone call from a scammer claiming that the IRS is filing a lawsuit against you and you would have to press 1 to be connected with the help line. If it weren’t for your critical mind you would not be able to question those kind of scenarios that could cause you serious financial problems. 

Hypnotherapy works by allowing the therapist to build a temporary bridge over the critical mind. This allows the subconscious to be open to new hypnotic suggestions to reframe the known associations that make up our unwanted habits such as smoking, eating too much junk food, or self sabotaging behaviors like procrastination. This practice can also be used to help you overcome your fears that are holding you back from reaching your goals of success. Then, once the hypnosis session is over, you come out of hypnosis completely aware of your surroundings, and you may feel very relaxed and at ease with yourself.
